Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley suggested he was not familiar with comments made by captain Ben Stokes about the team environment not being "weak men".

The all-rounder delivered this message in multiple interviews following his team's loss in the second Ashes series against Australia earlier this month.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where England now face defeat with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "drift around" within the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I required," said Stokes.

But, after the opener scored 85 on the penultimate day in the third Test, he stated: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take anything stated in the press with a pinch of salt," Crawley continued.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The team afterwards took a holiday to Noosa between the second and the upcoming matches.

Before this match, Stokes said his team had held "honest" talks and he had asked them to "show a bit of dog" in their effort to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in leadership.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, unchanged," said the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of something special entering this Test."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's wicket on day four was part of a decisive three-wicket burst by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

Lyon's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Harry Brook and Ben Stokes – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia require four wickets on the final day to secure an insurmountable 3-0 lead with three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of play – after England fell the first two Tests in rapid time each.

The last time 1921, when Australia completed a series win in England in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also won in 11 days on two other occasions in the modern era.

"This is disheartening," said the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and we're facing elimination at this point."

"There will still be plenty to play for and we will certainly approach it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be tough touring here against them. They entered as the favourites and they've proven why."

Ollie Pope's Place In Question

Although Crawley's innings in the third Test probably answers doubts about his immediate future in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his position in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

Pope was out for 17 in England's second knock on Saturday, adding to his modest returns against the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has failed to score a half-century and boasts an average of 17.62.

Only one other England player in over a century – Dennis Amiss – has featured as many times in the top order in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

However, Crawley insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised originates with "you guys" – referring to the press – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware of his considerable talent," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played some really good knocks. This is noise from the outside. There's no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," he concluded.
