Seven accused individuals of German left-wing extremist group face trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist organization together with several other European far-left and anarchist groups.

German prosecutors state the network was responsible for targeting locations in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against neo-Nazis in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and group hierarchy

The former East Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth groups, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Together with Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E, emerged as a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, freezes any assets they could possess within the world’s largest economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or remain detained.”
