The megacity Rises to Dangerous Smog Post Celebrations
Tuesday brought inhabitants of the world's most polluted city found themselves breathing extremely polluted air that fell into the "alarming" level.
Alarming Pollution Levels
Various sections of the city showed an AQI over 500, which translates to ten times the safe limit established by the WHO.
In some locations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 hit highs of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x above safe levels.
Fireworks Restrictions and Current Changes
Since 2020, the government had implemented a comprehensive restriction on the distribution and bursting of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their significant contribution to the deadly haze that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather approaches.
Nevertheless recently, the recently formed city administration appealed to the judicial authority to propose a easing of the restrictions.
The suggestion was allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" ā historically questioned by environmentalists as being only about 30% lower impact ā as a balance between "heritage and ecological concerns".
Judicial Ruling and Reality
Much to the frustration of medical and ecological campaigners, judges agreed to the request, stipulating that eco-friendly pyrotechnics could be set off during specific time windows throughout the Diwali.

Several monitoring devices throughout the city registered contamination peaking around the night hours to some of the worst measurements observed during the festival in at least three years.

The proliferation of pyrotechnics during the festival also triggered a blame game with adjacent Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab pointing to declining atmospheric conditions in Lahore on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the events.
Long-Standing Pollution Issue
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the capital have remained as a serious problem for fifteen-plus years, with the problem continuing to worsen.
Around celebratory seasons, the concentration of hazardous particles in the environment has been observed to increase dramatically to seventy percent above the worst readings ever recorded in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the planet's dirtiest urban center.
Diverse Pollution Sources
The situation in the city is attributed to a mix of multiple factors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, development work, garbage fires and smoke from crop residue ignition in nearby states of Punjab and Haryana.
Within these states, agricultural workers illegally ignite agricultural waste to prepare for next season, generating toxic pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air arrives.
Health and Economic Toll
Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the capital region is substantial, according to various studies.
These hazardous conditions leads to elevated rates of neurological, cardiovascular and breathing disorders, and can result in malignancies.
The pollution is projected to be responsible for ten thousand untimely deaths per year in the city.
