During an first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reinvent” the metropolis, declaring “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Mayor

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this comes rarely and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Costly Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
• A experiment of municipally-operated grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion expense of these services may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

The new mayor must contend with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were revealed during the transition when a appointments director stepped down over offensive past social media posts.

Mamdani has sought to address these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a recent meeting between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Core Challenges of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in delivering essential functions: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a quirky piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
